Rhode Island Coronavirus Cases Spike By 394; 16 New Deaths

PROVIDENCE, RI โ€” Rhode Island saw another large spike in cases of the new coronavirus Tuesday, bringing the cumulative total to 5,500. There were 394 new positive cases and 16 additional deaths, bringing the death toll to 171.

At this time, 271 people are in the hospital with COVID-19. Of these, 67 are in intensive care units, while 43 require ventilators, according to the latest data from the Rhode Island Department of Health.

According to Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, director of the Department of Health, six of Tuesday's reported deaths happened Monday, and the remaining 10 in the days prior. One of the victims was in their 30s, two in their 50s, four in their 70s, three in their 80s and six in their 90s.

Providence still has the highest number of cases at 1,524. A map created by Facebook and Carnegie Mellon university shows that approximately 1 in 100 residents in Providence County are symptomatic.
