Cranston East Band Wins $10,000 in Glee Contest

Cranston East is the winner of $10,000 in a national contest.

The prize was announced yesterday by the Glee Give a Note campaign.

Cranston East was one of 73 schools chosen to be a winner in the contest after their submission, a video extolling the virtues of the band and music program at the schools, generated thousands of clicks during a spirited effort by the local community to vote for them.

A total of 492 schools submitted videos to compete in the contest. More than 1 million votes were cast. All the videos were posted on the www.gleegiveanote.com website.

Ryan Murphy, creator of GLEE, and the National Education for Music Education teamed up to form the GLEE Give a Note "to fight for struggling programs all across the country," according to the foundation's website.

“’Glee’ has always been about the importance of arts education, and Brad, Ian and I have felt strongly from the beginning that the show has a responsibility to give back,” commented co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy. “We congratulate the winners and want the thousands of students across the country who submitted to know how impressed we were with their passion and talent. Music programs were incredibly important to me growing up, and we hope that our show and initiatives like ‘Give a Note’ continue to demonstrate how much they mean to our kids.”
