Cranston Man Sentenced to Serve 25 Years for Rape

Andre Marizan, 25, of Cranston, will spend the next 25 years in prison as part of a 40-year sentence handed down by Superior Court Justice Stephen P. Nugent Thursday.

Marizan was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault on Jan. 23 by a jury after a four-day trial.

Court records show that Marizan raped the physically helpless and mentally incapacitated woman in 2012 after a night of drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

Marizan and the victim reportedly had known each other for several years.

The victim passed out in a bedroom and when she woke up, discovered she was partially clothed and the defendant was lying next to her. She also discovered signs that she had been sexually assaulted.

The victim went to the hospital, a rape kit was performed and DNA evidence showed Marizan was responsible for the rape.

“Despite the trauma of being sexually abused, by going to the hospital for a rape kit and reporting the assault to the police, this young woman courageously took the steps that eventually led to her abuser being found guilty,” said Attorney General Peter Kilmartin. “April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it. This year’s theme reminds us that everyone can play a role in stopping sexual assault and that we must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention, supporting survivors and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions. When we all play a role we can prevent sexual violence.”

All told, Marizan was sentenced to 40 years, 25 to serve, and he was ordered to have sex offender counseling.

Upon release, Marizan will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
