East Grad Wins Scholarship Just in Time for College

The Have it Your Way Foundation announced Ann Phung, a graduate of Cranston High School East, has won a scholarship for her outstanding academic achievement and community involvement.

The Have it Your Way Foundation announced Ann Phung, a graduate of Cranston High School East, has been awarded one of three scholarships given to Rhode Island college-bound students this year.

The foundation is part of the Burger King Scholars Program, which was created in memory of Burger King co-founder James W. McLamore.

This year, 1,249 studetns were awarded $1,000 scholarships and five won $5,000 regional scholarships. This year, for the first time ever, the foundation gave away three $50,000 scholarships and one $25,000 award.

“In today’s economy, it’s too easy for dreams to be deferred. The [scholarship program] helps to ensure that committed and accomplished students can achieve their dreams," said Ivette Diaz, executive director of the Have it Your Way Foundation. 

It's the eleventh year the scholarships have been doled out. The winners were chosen for outstanding academic achievement and meeting certian community involvement criteria.

The Have it Your Way fund is funded by Burger King restaurants around the country that host fundraisers. For more information or to apply for a scholarship in 2012, visit www.haveityourwayfoundation.org

The two other Rhode Island students recieving scholarships are: Brittany Salzillo, of Tolman High School in Pawtucket and Syeda Menebhi, of Smithfield High School.
