CRANSTON, RI โ€” A major shakeup in leadership is coming to the Rhode Island Statehouse. After more than a decade representing his district and six years as House speaker, Nicholas Mattiello conceded the race for Cranston's District 15.

In the biggest upset of the Statehouse races, Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung, wife of current Cranston mayor and former gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung, won the race by more than 17 percentage points in a race that was called early in the evening by The Associated Press. Wednesday morning, after mail-in ballots were tallied just after 1 a.m., Mattiello conceded.

"While I wish last night's outcome had been different, it in no way diminishes the privilege of serving the House for so long. It's been a good run," Mattiello said in statement. "We have achieved so much โ€” I wish we could do even more. But I leave this race โ€” and this position โ€” with a heart full of gratitude."

Fenton-Fung said the speaker did not reach out directly to concede the race.

"Every warrior who enters the arena is to be commended. It is not for the faint of heart, and this battle was certainly bruising on both sides," she said. "To win this election we formed a fantastic coalition here in District 15, and I'll continue to bring that bipartisan nature up to the State House to knock heads together and get things done. My husband's legacy in Cranston lives on. Fung times are here to stay. "
