Pawtuxet River Flooding Caused Problems In Cranston

Several families were forced out of their apartments on Oaklawn Avenue because of rooms taking in six to eight inches of water.

CRANSTON, RI — Heavy rains flooded the Pawtuxet River overnight Tuesday, affecting several neighborhoods in town and in Providence. A flood warning was is in place for Kent, Providence and parts of northern Washington counties until Wednesday night.

Several families were forced out of their apartments on Oaklawn Avenue when the rooms were flooded by six to eight inches of water.

"There was about 3 1/2, almost 4 feet of water in the parking lot," Tom Grassia told Turn to 10 after his apartment flooded.

Another resident recorded video of the intersection of Oaklawn Avenue and Dean Parkway near the apartment complex. The street was completely flooded.

The apartment manager at the Dean Estates Oaklawn Avenue apartments told WPRI 12 the residents are now in hotels and or with friends and family. He said the plan is for residents to meet at the complex Wednesday morning with a plan for what to do next.

Turn to 10 reported that a van got stuck in flood waters on Valley Street in Providence between Atwells Avenue and Broadway at about midnight.

A tow truck driver pulled the driver out of the water, hooked up her car and towed it to a dry part of the road. The woman driving was okay.

Streets affected by the flooding included Atwood Avenue, Oaklawn Avenue, Avery Road and Wellington Avenue in Cranston.

Flood stage for the Pawtuxet is 9 feet, which the river has already risen above. The river will continue rising to near 9.8 feet by Wednesday morning. If flood waters reach 10 feet, Pioneer Avenue, Bellows Street and Venturi Avenue in Warwick would also flood, the National Weather Service said.
