Gender-Neutral Designation Now Allowed On Rhode Island Licenses
Instead of the traditional "M" or "F" gender designation, licenses will show an X.

CRANSTON, RI โ Rhode Island drivers now have the option to select "gender-neutral" as an option on their license. Instead of the traditional "M" of "F" designation, the option will appear as an X.
Gov. Gina Raimondo said that the change is symbolic as Pride Month draws to a close.
"Representation matters at every level, and I am proud to make our government better reflect the diverse identities of Rhode Islanders," Raimondo said. "This change will allow Rhode Islanders who do not have a binary gender to finally see themselves correctly identified on their driver's license. Although Pride Month is coming to an end, the work of ensuring that our LGBTQIA neighbors have the support they deserve continues."

To change the gender designation on their driver's license, Rhode Islanders must fill out a Gender Designation Form and an LI-1 Form. The forms must be returned in person to the Department of Motor Vehicles by making an appointment online.
If the change is made at the time of license renewal, there is no additional charge. To make the change before the license expires, the fee is $27.50.
