Girls Lacrosse: Townies Late Goal Barrage Takes Down Thunderbolts

East Providence waged a comeback and defeated Cranston East 10-9 in a rainy game on Wednesday.

East Providence's girls lacrosse team (2-6) traveled to Cranston Stadium on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Thunderbolts (4-4). The weather was not ideal, as it was raining for most of the game. The Townies scored three late goals, notching a 10-9 comeback victory.

Thunderbolts sophomore Caroline Lema got the game's first goal only four minutes into play. East Providence's Alexandria Amaral responded a minute-and-a-half later, evening the score at one.

Cranston East struck back quickly. Captain Harmony Tillson scored just 15 seconds later.

East Providence took control of the game over the next twelve-and-a-half minutes during which they scored six goals and Cranston East only managed one. The Townies had surged ahead to a 7-3 lead.

During the streak, Amaral scored two of her five goals on the afternoon, including the last one with about six-and-half minutes left in the first half.

The Thunderbolts responded with four straight goals before halftime, the last coming with only 40 seconds left in the half. Sophomore Annie Clarkin tied the game at seven with a juke move to get past a defender.

After 14 goals had been scored in the first half, only one was scored during the first 20 minutes of the second half. Tillson notched her second goal of the game about halfway through the period, giving the Thunderbolts an 8-7 lead.

It was a lead they could not protect. East Providence managed to score three goals in only one minute of play, the last goal was scored by Amaral with about three-and-a-half minutes left in the game.

Cranston East scored a goal with about a minute left, but could not get another to tie the score. East Providence came away with the 10-9 victory.
