Girls Soccer: Lady Bolts' Strike First and Hold on to Defeat West Warwick 1-0

Cranston East created consistent pressure for the entire game but were only able to hit the net once, but kept the Wizards off the board for the 1-0 victory.

Cranston East played host to West Warwick in Girls Soccer on a wet Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Bolts came out with a lot of fire and spent a lot of time in the offensive zone to start the contest. They put consistent pressure on the Wizards but weren't able to score until the twentieth minute when freshman Samantha Canales was able to dribble to her right past a defender and score on the open left side of the net to put Cranston East on top 1-0. Canales had another opportunity about a minute later but missed wide left.

The Lady Bolts continued their unrelenting offensive attack for the remainder of the half with Canales and Captain Kelsey Evje. Evje set up Selina Canales in front of the net but her shot trickled just over the crossbar.

Cranston East also did a great job keeping West Warwick out of their defensive zone with great defense frim Erin Torres and Emily Bitton.

West Warwick stepped up their offensive intensity to start the second half and had a golden opportunity to score on a centering pass, which three Wizards whiffed on.

The game was played in the middle of the field for about ten minutes after that scoring opportunity. But Cranston East picked their offense back up and dominated the rest of the second half. The Canales sisters along with Kelsey Evje continued their attack on the Wizards defense. They were unable to score but they possessed the ball and took pressure off their defense and goalie. The horn sounded and the Lady Bolts' took the win 1-0.

Samantha Canales and Kelsey Evje were the key to the Cranston East victory, with consistent play in the middle of the field and in the offensive zone.

Cranston East Coach Lauren Tomasso talked about her midfielder and forward after the game.

"A ball did not go over Kelsey's head today. She really dominated the middle."

"Sam's a freshmen but she has a very good knowledge of the game. And she has really good control of her body and the ball. I think that's why she scored that goal today."

Cranston East wins 1-0 on the goal from Canales and will face-off against Mount Pleasant on friday.
