Narragansett defeats Cranston West 3-2 in junior varsity match

The Narragansett Mariners prevailed in a close, 3-2 girls junior varisty tennis contest against the Falcons on Tuesday afternoon at .

The format is slightly different in junior varsity, than in varsity tennis matches. There are five games, and the first team to win three of them, wins the match. All five matches are doubles matches. In varsity tennis, there are four singles matches and three doubles, with five points needed for a victory. Another slight difference is there are no sets in each match, the first to 10 points wins the game.

Narragansett's number two doubles team of Helen Sili and Briana Provost defeated the Falcons Casey O'Connell and Irina Kreshchuk 10-5. Brook McGreen and Ashley Kennedy combined for a 10-5 victory over West's Kerri Callahan and Michaela Tridento at number four.

The Falcons fifth team of Lauren Giorgio and Ali Knasin battled back from a 3-0 deficit, but fell to Kasha Pike and Rachel Sylvia 10-5.

The number one doubles teams and number three doubles teams would each go to a tie-breaker after being tied at 9. In the tie-breaker the teams played the first to 10 points. The Mariners Emily McGreen and Ashley Kennedy won their match, by winning the tie-breaker 10-7.

The best match of the day paired the teams top squads. Kara Heatherton and Ali Castrovillari matched up against West's Ali Parkes and Ali Neves. Both teams fought hard and the match was very intense. After being tied at 9, in the tie-breaker, the first team to record two consecutive points would win the match.

Neves and Parkes gutted out the 13-11 tie-breaker victory, but the Mariners won the overall match 3-2. Narragansett improves to 3-4 on the season and Cranston West drops to 1-5.
