Lane Shift Coming To I-95 At Eddy Street

RIDOT is starting work on five bridges in Providence.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Now that work is finished on Interstate's Oxford Bridge, new lane shifts are on the way for the next set of bridge repair projects. The first round of lane shifts is set to go into place on I-95 South on Friday night.

The lane shift is needed for work on the Eddy Street Bridge, which carries the highway over Eddy Street, near Rhode Island Hospital and the Interstate 195 split. Starting Friday night, lanes will be shifted to the left, lasting until next spring, when traffic will be shifted to the right. Lane closures are likely in the area from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews put the new traffic pattern in place.

The Eddy Street Bridge is one of the busiest stretches of highway in Providence, carrying around 167,000 vehicles every day. When driving through the work zone, RIDOT encourages drivers to use extra caution.

In all, five bridges will be repaired over the course of the $12.7 million project. Four bridge overpasses are also set to be repaired: Broad Street, Westminster Street, Washington Street and Broadway. Broadway and Broad Street will have full bridge deck replacements, with concrete repairs, steel bear reprais, deck joint repairs or replacement, painting and more scheduled for all.

At this time, no full closures are planned for any of the overpasses, RIDOT said, but lane closures are likely next year. Construction on all five bridges is set to be complete by Spring 2022.
