Low Childhood Vaccinations Poised To Be 'A Real Issue' In RI
Gov. Gina Raimondo strongly encouraged all parents to make sure their children's vaccinations were up-to-date as schools prepare to reopen.
PROVIDENCE, RI โ Rhode Island schools poised to reopen in just a few short weeks, Gov. Gina Raimondo urged all parents to make sure they're children's vaccinations are up to date.
Rhode Island has traditionally been a leader in vaccination rates, often outstripping national rates. In 2018, the state led the nation in adult flu vaccination rates, and was in second place for childhood flu vaccines.

"This will be a real issue in the winter if we don't address it," Raimondo said at this week's news conference.

Raimondo urged all Rhode Island parents to call their child's pediatrician as soon as possible to get their immunizations completed. Those without health insurance can call 855-840-4774 to learn more about coverage.
"While weโre facing a virus for which we donโt yet have a vaccine, we can't take our eye off the ball and allow other childhood illnesses to resurge," Raimondo said. "Our pediatricians are taking extreme caution โ keeping waiting rooms clear, using personal protective equipment, conducting infection control, and requiring health screenings. These protections are designed to mitigate risk of exposure to the virus. The biggest concern at this point is not vaccinating your child."
