Pedestrian Seriously Injured When Struck By Car In Cranston: Cops

The pedestrian suffered a broken leg, a concussion, possible internal injuries and a laceration to his head, police said.

CRANSTON, RI — A pedestrian suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a car Friday night, police said.

The man suffered a broken leg, a concussion, possible internal injuries and a laceration to his head, the Cranston Police Department said in a media release.

The man was struck shortly before 8 p.m. on Garfield Avenue between Texas Roadhouse and Route 10 South, according to the release.

"The driver, a juvenile male operating a 2009 Honda Accord, remained on scene, called 911, and rendered aid to the pedestrian," the release said. "He was cooperative with investigators and provided a written statement."

The injured man was in critical condition and taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, according to the release.

"Preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was walking northbound on Garfield Avenue while the vehicle was traveling southbound in the right-hand lane," the release said.

"The driver reported he did not see the pedestrian prior to impact," according to the release. "At this time, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor. Weather conditions at the time included rain, sleet, fog, and temperatures around 34 degrees, which may have affected visibility despite the presence of street lighting in the area."

The Accord was towed to police headquarters for further examination and forensic data collection, according to the release, and surveillance video from a nearby business is being obtained as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police asked any witnesses to contact the Cranston Police Department Traffic Unit.
