Photo Gallery: Glen Hills Elementary Students Visit Joy Homestead
Students learned how rugs, yarn, clothing and toys were made during 18th Century America.
Ms. Myette's 3rd grade class from Glen Hills Elementary School made a field trip to Joy Homestead in Cranston on Monday to learn about Colonial life. About 20 third-graders accompanied by several parent chaperones attended the event.
The third-graders got hands-on experience spinning wool, making a rag carpet, weaving cloth and even got to play with some wooden puppets. The event was run by Lydia Rapoza and stations were taught by Donald Carpenter, who handled weaving, and Diana Reissman who taught the students how to make yarn from sheep's wool.
The students also got to hear from Ronald Sullman, an actor who played a revolutionary soldier from the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment.

Elementary school students have been attending events like this at the Joy Homestead and Sprague Mansion for seven to eight years, according to Ms. Myette. She said the students enjoy the chance to take a field trip, but at the same time get the opportunity to learn history from a great community resource.
