Reds Make a Comeback, But Fall Short

Cranston was tied with Boston after the first period, but couldn't keep up with the speed of the Warriors.

The Cranston Reds took on the Boston Warriors in under-18 hockey on Saturday. Both teams feature players from across the country as well as the globe. Their common goal: to play collegiate hockey. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead, which they yielded, but recovered to run away with an 8-4 victory.

Boston jumped on top early when Nikolay Savitsky banged home a wrist shot in the second minute. The Warriors were flying early in the period and moving the puck well. Trevor Medeiros found Gino Carpeno in front of the net for the Warriors second goal in the first five minutes of play.

After looking overmatched in the early going, the Reds created some counterattack opportunities. Ryan Tachikawa got Cranston on the board with a wrist shot at 8:27 in the first period, making it 2-1.

Less than a minute later, Melikhov Yury had a screaming shot for the Warriors, but it was gloved by Jarond Dauphinais to preserve the one goal deficit.

Tim Lafleur tied the score on the ensuing play and the Reds erased a two-goal deficit, knotting the score at 2. But the tie was short-lived as the Warriors lit up the light again with four minutes remaining in the period off a Reds turnover. CJ Hayes found Melikhov Yury to give Boston a 3-2 lead.

Cranston went on the power play at the end of the first period, but couldn't find the net in one minute of power play time. But with a minute left in the power play to start the second period, Tommy Migliaccio tied the score at 3.

After the Migliaccio goal the Warriors stepped up their intensity and controlled the neutral zone with their speed and passing. They took the lead in the second period with CJ Hayes finding the nylon on a backhand chance. The Warriors found the net four more times in the contest and coasted through the third period. The Reds scored once more, in the third, but were overwhelmed by the speed and puck-moving ability of the Warriors. The Reds couldn't keep up with Boston and fell 8-4. Cranston will face off against the Massachusetts Maple Leafs on Wednesday in New Bedford.
