Renumbering I-95 Exits In RI Delayed Again

Supply chain issues once again delayed getting I-95 in line with federal rules for highway numbering.

CRANSTON, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) again delayed renumbering the exits along Interstate 95 in Rhode Island, state transportation officials said.

The renumbering was originally supposed to begin on July 31, but it was delayed because of supply chain issues. The postponement date was supposed to be Sunday, but RIDOT officials told ABC 6 News supply chain issues are still a problem, so the project will begin during the next few weeks.

"A mile-marker exit number system lets drivers know how far they need to travel to reach their desired off-ramp," a spokesperson for RIDOT said in a news release. "It also allows for easier expansion for future interchanges, since the entire highway would not have to be renumbered to accommodate a new exit number. RIDOT will install temporary signs indicating the old exit number and will leave them up for an extended period of time."

The project is expected to take about a month.
