PROVIDENCE, RI — Permanent repairs are underway on a Providence street after a sinkhole opened up in the middle of the road during the Friday evening commute. The area around the Manton Avenue and Atwell Avenue intersection will be closed on Monday as crews work to fix the issue, and drivers are asked to avoid the areas as much as possible.

A large sinkhole opened in the street on Friday evening, causing serious traffic delays in the area. The Providence City Council reported the issue just before 6 p.m., with photos showing the deep break in the pavement and cracking surrounding it.

Following the initial collapse, crews were able to temporarily repair the damage and the road was reopened for the weekend. On Monday morning, work began on a permanent solution, which is expected to be completed by the end of the day. While construction is underway, drivers will be detoured around the worksite and traffic backups are likely. The Providence City COuncil asked drivers to seek an alternate route if possible.
