Report: Radon in Local School Above Normal

A long radon test is under way at Gladstone Elementary School after elevated levels of radon were detected.

Gladstone Elementary School is one of several schools that has tested higher than normal radon levels, according to a WPRI report.

Two months ago, tests showed radon levels four times above the acceptable limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The school now has an ongoing long-term test. If it shows elevated radon levels, mitigation will be required.

“I think one of the reasons is that this school sits on a former coal mine," said Joel Zisserson, the school district's plant manager. "It gets frustrating, but we’re very much on top of it and when we get the test results and see that it’s not within what we should be, it gets frustrating, and we will mitigate."
