PROVIDENCE, RI — Two Rhode Island lawmakers spoke out Tuesday following the announcement of two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Representative David Cicilline stood with House Democrats in statements released following the announcement.

On Tuesday morning, top House Democrats announced two articles of impeachment, to be voted on by the Judiciary Committee later this week. A full House vote is expected next week.

"The facts are beyond dispute," Congressmen David Cicilline said in a statement. "President Trump abused his office, the enormous power of the presidency, to solicit foreign interference in an American election, specifically to help in his re-election. His actions undermined our national security. President Trump put his own personal, political interests ahead of our country’s interest. His conduct makes him a clear and present danger to both our democracy and our national security."

Cicilline went on to say that the articles of impeachment "capture the scope of [Trump's] most serious misconduct, including referencing his pattern of wrongdoing."

"Donald Trump has given us no other choice than to move forward with impeachment. Nearly 250 years ago, our Founding Fathers envisioned that our country might face a crisis like the one before us today. We will proceed with the only remedy provided in our Constitution," he concluded.

Over the weekend, Cicilline and President Trump went head-to-head on Twitter after he called the congressman several of his colleagues "losers" and "radical left haters."

"This is a sad day for America," Congressman Jim Langevin said. "While impeaching a president is by no means good news for the nation, as elected officials we must uphold our oath to defend our Constitution and preserve our democracy. After careful consideration of the facts presented, I have decided to support the articles of impeachment proposed by the Judiciary Committee to make sure the president is held accountable and that we protect our nation."

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse also voiced his support for the proceedings.

"I commend the House on its somber and judicious impeachment inquiry," Whitehouse said in a statement. "Should these articles clear the House, I look forward to their thorough and fair consideration in the Senate."
