RI Named Among Most Expensive Winter Travel Destinations

The Providence-Warwick metro area has high travel costs and hassles, according to a new ranking from WalletHub.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The winter travel season is almost upon us, which means it's time to make an important decision: to lean into the season and enjoy the cold weather or head south to seek warmer temperatures. According to a new ranking by WalletHub, Rhode Island is among the best cold-weather vacation destinations in the country.

In a ranking of the 32 best cities for cold-weather travel, the Providence-Warwick metro area was named number 28.

When it comes to travel cost and convenience, the Ocean State is near the bottom of the list. Providence is ranked at number 29 in the "Highest Travel Costs and Most Hassles" category, only fourth from the worst, which is Worchester, Massachusetts.

Rhode Island ranked best in the "safety" category, coming in at number 5. Here's how it ranked in the rest of the categories:

  • Travel costs and hassles: 29
  • Local costs: 25
  • Attractions: 27
  • Weather: 13
  • Cold-Weather Activities: 25
  • Safety: 5

Nearby Boston, Massachusetts fared far better in the ranking, named number 6 overall. At the top of the list is Chicago, followed by Washington, DC and Atlanta, Georgia.
