RIDOT To Renumber Exits On I-195 In Providence
Starting December 2, crews will begin to change exit signs to miles markers on I-195 from Providence to the Massachusetts state line.
PROVIDENCE, RI — Exit numbers on Interstates 195 in Providence will be changing in the coming weeks. Starting Dec. 2, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation will begin renumbering exits from the I-95 interchange to the border of Massachusetts in East Providence.
The new exit numbers will be based on mile markers rather than listed sequentially as part of a national mandate from the Federal Highway Administration. Rhode Island and other New England states are among the last to adopt the changes, which have been in place for several years.
Mile-marker exits let drivers see how far they need to drive to reach their exit, RIDOT said, and allows exits to be added more easily in the future by eliminating the need to re-number exits to make room for the new addition. Temporary signs with the old exit numbers will be posted for awhile to help drivers transition to the new system.

The project will also replace faded, worn signs along the highway, as well as replace aging support structures to meet today's standards.
This project will also renumber exits on Route 10 from Park Avenue in Cranston to Route 6 in Providence, and Route 37 from Post Road in Warwick to Natick Avenue in Cranston. Both highways will be addressed before the end of the year, after the I-195 section is complete. Starting next spring, Route 24 will be renumbered from the Massachusetts border in Tiverton to West Main Road in Portsmouth.
