CRANSTON, RI — Senator Jack Reed announced $50 million in federal funding to help repair and replace Rhode Island's structurally deficient bridges on Monday. The announcement was made in the shadow of one of the states largest deficient bridges, the Huntington Viaduct in Cranston.

The bridge carries traffic on Route 10 over Interstate 95, Wellington Avenue and Amtrak's Northeast corridor, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation said. The additional funding will help accelerate the replacement project.

Rhode Island's bridges are notoriously aged, ranked the worst in the country by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association in April. Of the state's 780 bridges, 180, or 23.1 percent, were structurally deficient at the time of the survey.
