Thurbers Ave. Lane Shift Delayed Due To Rain
A planned lane shift on I-95 North in Providence is being delayed one week due to forecasted rain.
PROVIDENCE, RI — A lane shift set to go into place on Interstate 95 in Providence on Sunday has been delayed one week. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced Friday that the project has been moved forward due to rain in the forecast for the weekend. Delays are expected in the already high traffic area as crews conduct bridge work.
RIDOT says the lane shift is needed to repair the Oxford Street bridge, which is just past the Thurbers Avenue exit. Only the northbound lanes will be affected by the project, which will leave all lanes open while shifting everything to the left. Delays are expected to increase in the area, where between the short Thurbers Avenue on-ramp and the I-95/I-195 split ahead of downtown Providence backups are already a daily occurrence. RIDOT said the project was planned for the summer months because traffic tends to be lower in the area during the warmer months.
Under the new schedule, the lane shift will now go into place on Friday, April 12.

Because of rain in the forecast Sunday into Monday, we have postponed the traffic pattern change on I-95 North in Providence at Exit 18. It will now take place on Friday night, April 12. We also had to postpone a schedule closure of the Rte. 2 NB ramp to Rte. 117 in Warwick.
