Coronavirus RI: Trump Approves 'Major Disaster' Declaration

State, local and tribal leaders in Rhode Island can now receive federal funding to help with the coronavirus response effort.

PROVIDENCE, RI โ€” On Monday, President Donald Trump declared the coronavirus pandemic a major disaster in Rhode Island, allowing the state access to federal funding to help with the response to the outbreak. As of Monday, there were 114 new cases of the virus in the state, bringing the total above 400 cases.

"Though it may not sound like it, this is a good thing," Gov. Gina Raimondo said.

Following the disaster declaration, state, local officials can now get reimbursed for expenses incurred for the coronavirus response, going back to Jan. 20. This includes cleaning fees, the cose of personal protective equipment and more.
