Local Artist Dan Lake Features Latest Work

East Greenwich artist Dan Lake, a juried artist member of the Wickford Art Association, will feature work at the Imperial Gallery in Providence throughout the month of December.

Selected paintings will also be available for viewing at Voila! in Wickford later this month. Lake says he is pleased to join Rhode Island’s community of artists.

“In 2010, I attended Open Studio hours at the Wickford Art Association’s gallery. Since that time I have created numerous representational oils featuring Rhode Island images, as well as portrait works. I have displayed my work in various Rhode Island venues during 2011-2012, most recently winning a first place award in the Open Juried show 'Art of the Ocean State' in July of 2012.”

Lake credits his inspiration from his mentor Wassily Sommer, an Alaskan artist/teacher with whom he worked for 10 years in Anchorage, Alaska.

“From Wassily I learned to use a classical technique which involves under-painting with earth tones (usually umber or burnt sienna) to set composition and values, then over-painting with oils both opaque and transparent,” says Lake. “My use of color was also influenced by a short period of work with artists Sergei Bongart, Ron Lucas, and Del Gish, a group who held summer workshops in Rexburg, Idaho.”
