Cool Music, Cool Breezes Reward Concert-Goers
The Thursday evening series at Academy Field featured 5 Flavor Discount.
By 7pm Thursday evening, much of Academy Field was in shade and the music of 5 Flavor Discount was in full swing. A breeze was blowing and it was hard to imagine that there was a more pleasant spot to be in East Greenwich.
Several concert-goers agreed. βThis is an awesome venue,β said Karen Kelly. βI love this kind of low key concert,β said Bill Zech. Kelly and Zech said they attend many of the Thursday concerts.
Carla Priebe sat with a big group of friends. βWe do this every week,β she said. βWeβve done this for years - we love it. Weβre so excited theyβve added a fifth concert this year.β
Usually, the concert series runs for four Thursdays in July. This year the EG Parks & Recreation Dept., which puts on the concerts, added a fifth Thursday, Aug. 4.
Several families with young children attended the concert Thursday, including Bethany Verret and her daughter Lola, 7.
βItβs just fun. The kids like to run around and see their friends,β said Bethany. One of those friends, Kendal Wheeler, added, βI like dancing.β
Cara and Pete Capalbo and their two kids live in Cowesett and can hear the music at their house, but they enjoy coming to the field.
βThey love to come down here,β said Cara said of her children. βWe bring dinner.β
There are two more concerts: On July 28, Jennifer Minuto Group will be playing Β jazz, pop and R&B selections. On Aug. 4, Avenue A will be playing swing, dixie and jazz.
