Cool Music, Cool Breezes Reward Concert-Goers

The Thursday evening series at Academy Field featured 5 Flavor Discount.

By 7pm Thursday evening, much of Academy Field was in shade and the music of 5 Flavor Discount was in full swing. A breeze was blowing and it was hard to imagine that there was a more pleasant spot to be in East Greenwich.

Several concert-goers agreed. β€œThis is an awesome venue,” said Karen Kelly. β€œI love this kind of low key concert,” said Bill Zech. Kelly and Zech said they attend many of the Thursday concerts.

Carla Priebe sat with a big group of friends. β€œWe do this every week,” she said. β€œWe’ve done this for years - we love it. We’re so excited they’ve added a fifth concert this year.”

Usually, the concert series runs for four Thursdays in July. This year the EG Parks & Recreation Dept., which puts on the concerts, added a fifth Thursday, Aug. 4.

Several families with young children attended the concert Thursday, including Bethany Verret and her daughter Lola, 7.

β€œIt’s just fun. The kids like to run around and see their friends,” said Bethany. One of those friends, Kendal Wheeler, added, β€œI like dancing.”

Cara and Pete Capalbo and their two kids live in Cowesett and can hear the music at their house, but they enjoy coming to the field.

β€œThey love to come down here,” said Cara said of her children. β€œWe bring dinner.”

There are two more concerts: On July 28, Jennifer Minuto Group will be playing Β jazz, pop and R&B selections. On Aug. 4, Avenue A will be playing swing, dixie and jazz.
