Gilbert Stuart Museum Celebrates 80 Years with Nighttime Fundraiser

Moonlight Magic in Saunderstown, Arts Highlighted in Wakefield, Comedy in Newport and More

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this summer weekend. Although there are no major events on the East Greenwich calendar this Friday through Sunday, there are other great offerings around the state. Since the whole of RI is 45 miles long, it doesn’t take too long to get anywhere to do something fun. Check out the Patch picks for the best activities to hit and places to explore in your free time.

80 years ago, a group of concerned citizens purchased the home where famous American and created a museum in his name. That date is celebrated on the grounds Friday with a gala event featuring the artwork of Honorary Chair David Schock.

The gala will also feature live music by the Elderly Brothers, wine, a light supper and desserts, a silent auction and raffle, as well as a freshly painted and photograph-filled Artist-in-Residence art sale.

Why Go: Help the fish! The gala is a vital fundraiser to help offset the cost of the restoration of its fish-ladder dam, which protects an access for the famous Rhode Island buckies to spawn at Carr Pond.

Why Go: The Contempory Theater Company invites you to summer fun in the park with performances of the comedy “Red Herring” and an imaginative retelling of “Peter Pan, as well as a RiverFire and live music from Santa Mamba, La Bella Musica, Fly Around and the Bit Players.

Pricing: Festival is free with a charge per theater performance.

Why Go: Newport’s a great place to be in the summer. Have a few laughs while you’re there.

Why Go: It’s the place to go to see and be seen in your cool classic or muscle car.
