... Gone. The Old Cole Is No More

Once the building was cleared of hazardous and salvageable materials, demolition went quickly.

If you are driving on Cedar Avenue between Middle and Post roads, you may notice a big open space on the south side of the street.

The building that served as first East Greenwich High School, then Archie R. Cole Junior High and, finally, Cole Middle School, is nothing but a couple of relatively small piles of rubble and rebar now.

The building opened in 1956 and served as a school until April, when the new Cole Middle School, built right next door, opened. Dismantling began immediately. Half of the building came down in June. The rest came down last week.

Work continues on transforming that area into parking for the new building. Officials said that the new parking lot will be ready for the start of school in September.
