Hey Nineteen Puts Odeum Back On Map

The Steely Dan tribute band plays to a sold-out crowd.

For the first time since reopening in January, the Greenwich Odeum hosted a sellout crowd for Hey Nineteen, a spot-on Steely Dan cover band. This sell out was all the more remarkable as this was Hey Nineteen's live debut. Hey Nineteen band members are no strangers to the Rhode Island stage and their fans came out in droves for a memorable performance of Steely Dan hits and deep tracks.

Local favorite Steve Caraccia (owner of Main Street Music in EG) played bass and was accompanied by Dale DeJoy on lead vocals and guitar along with Colin Nagle also on vocals and keyboard. Hey Nineteen were a total of 10 band members including 3-piece brass section including two female vocalists, these two vocalists carried the mantel of wearing '60s/'70s influenced outfits (didn't seem like the men in the band got the memo). The 80-year-old stage sagged under the weight of so much talent and the audience swelled with over 400 mostly AARP-card-carrying members. The anticipation in the Odeum before the show was extremely high and Hey Nineteen did not disappoint.

The band opened with "Do it Again," the first track off of the first Steely Dan studio album, and played two 50-minute sets which were not without some technical problems, which could only be expected from a band this new and a venue just getting back into action after so many years on the sidelines. Steely Dan was a band that strived for perfection in the studio which made these technical snafus all the more glaring.

Technical issues aside, the performance was enjoyable and Hey Nineteen will surely be back to the Odeum. Those who can't wait for the band's return to Main Street can catch Hey Nineteen in Newport on July 6 and Ocean Mist on August 30.  Hey Nineteen provided a memorable night for the audience looking to enjoy music that defined the '70s including "Pretzel Logic," "Kid Charlemagne," "Reelin in the Years," and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number."
