2012 Rhode Island Arbor Day Celebration

The Department of Environmental Management announces that the Rhode Island Arbor Day ceremony will be held this year on Friday, April 27 at Squantum Woods Park on Veterans' Memorial Parkway in East Providence, RI.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will include a speaking program, participation in the ceremony by the fifth grade class at Silver Spring Elementary School, and the planting of a Northern Red Oak tree at the park. This year's Arbor Day
celebration will congratulate the City of East Providence
for having maintained the National Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA designation for 20 years. The impressive list of guests include: DEM Director Janet Coit, East Providence Mayor Bruce Rogers, Carla Baker of Chevron and the fifth grade students from nearby Silver Spring Elementary.

This year's Arbor Day celebration will mark the close of
construction at the newly revitalized Squantum Woods
Park, a collaborative effort involving stakeholders from municipal, federal, non-profit, and private sectors. The successful improvements made to the site will directly improve water quality and ecological health, and also serve to better foster public enjoyment and access to the recreational area that was at one time part of the Rhode Island State Park system. Such is a reminder that despite tough economic times, great good can be accomplished through partnerships.
