Wrong-Way I-195 DUI Driver Arrested in East Providence

A Medtech ambulance managed to get the 24-year-old New Bedford man to pull over before anyone got hurt.

The Rhode Island State Police along with East Providence police arrested a 24-year-old New Bedford, Mass., man for driving under the influence after he allegedly went the wrong way on Interstate 195 early Sunday morning.

Police got several 911 calls reporting a wrong way driver at around 2:35 a.m. and state troopers and officers from East Providence and Seekonk soon came upon the suspect vehicle being driven by Marvin Hernandez, 24, of  New Bedford, parked in the breakdown lane near the Massachusetts border.

Police said Hernandez stopped after a Medtech ambulance activated its emergency lights.

Hernandez showed signs of intoxication, police said, and he was arrested at the scene.

He was later released on $1,000 personal recognizance after being arraigned by a justice of the peace. He is due to appear in court on Oct. 9 for arraignment in Sixth Division District Court in Providence.
