5 Things To Know Today: April 19

Mohr vacation fun; high school softball; hiring day at Mickey D's; party at the zoo; and today in history: the pace looks leisurely by comparison.

2-for-1 Listing: Marian J. Mohr Library hosts two programs today:

  • Drop-in Easter crafts for kids 3 and older with adult supervision, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • "Cool Beans," a celebration of Diversity Month for students in grade 6 to 12 using jelly beans — very creative (and yummy) idea. Starts at 6 p.m.

Hiring Day: The local McDonald's, at 1377 Atwood Ave. (5 points if you know what used to be there — answer below) is hosting National Hiring Day, the Golden Arches company's drive to fill 280 positions in Rhode Island, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mayor Polisena is scheduled to attend the event at 10 a.m., and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern New England is scheduled to make a $12,500 donation to Reach Out and Read Rhode Island.

Cheer The Lady Panthers: The softball team travels "all that way" to Pilgrim High School in Warwick for a 3:30 p.m. game.

2 At The Zoo: Roger Williams Park Zoo continues two programs today: Party for the Planet, a week-long celebration of Earth Day (which is Friday, by the by); and Name The Penguin Chicks, a contest that runs until April 30 to see who can suggest the best nomenclatures for the resident pair of newborn spheniscidae specimens. (Who said you can't learn things on school vacation?)

But Did The Sox Play?: On this date in 1897, the first Boston Marathon was run. Winner John McDermott of New York crossed the line in 2:55:10 — by comparison, yesterday's winning time was 2:03:02. (from brainyhistory.com and bostonmarathon.org)
