5 Things To Know Today: May 9

Learn some history at Mohr; town council meets tonight; indoor triathlon sign-ups at Cranston Y; one for the kids at Museum of Natural History; and today in history: Newport hosts Navy.

History At Mohr: Did you know that it's been 142 years since the Transcontinental Railroad was completed? If not, go to Marian J. Library at 3 p.m. for the next installment of their On This Day In History program to learn more about it; if so, go to the library and show off your knowledge of history. For middle and high school students.

Johnston Council Meets: The Johnston Town Council is scheduled to meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Court on Atwood Avenue. Watch JohnstonPatch for coverage, before and after the meeting.

Calling Tri-Athletes: Today is the last day to sign up for the Cranston YMCA's Indoor Triathlon, scheduled for May 15. Swim, bike, and run for 20 minutes each and put up your score against other Iron People (we're equal opportunity, you know). Fee is $15 for Y members, $25 for non-members, and all participants receive a cool t-shirt.

Navy Relocates: On this date in 1862, the U.S. Naval Academy moved from its previous base in Annapolis, Maryland, to Newport, where it remains to this day. (from brainyhistory.com)
