Great Escape: Death, Animals, And Teacher Misconduct

Movies, charity events, and comedians highlight this weekend's suggestions.

This week's suggestions include a foul-mouthed teacher, a guy who communicates with dead people and an animal-centered charity event. These may not be your kind of events — but you can't dispute the variety!

  • On Saturday night, you can have a great time while helping the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Zoobillee will start at 7 p.m. and include food from dozens of restaurants and caterers, along with entertainment by Redline. Tickets can be ordered by calling (401) 941-3910 ext. 337. This will be a great evening for the "party animals" out there.
  • Xtreme and Bachata Heightz will play Lupo's this Friday night. Tickets are $35, and the show starts at 10 p.m. If you've never heard of them before, don't feel bad, neither have I.
  • Bad Teacher, a movie starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, and Justin Segel opens this weekend. It's about a foul-mouthed, gold-digging teacher who likes to drink and get high, who is looking for a wealthy husband. Perhaps it will make you feel nostalgic about one of your former teachers.
  • Are you "Working For the Weekend?" If so, you might want to check out 80's pop band Loverboy at the Twin River Events Center this Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $32.50.
  • Catch A Rising Star will be hosting LOL Thursdays all summer long. Each evening, several comedians from the area will perform short sets. The laughs begin at 7:30 p.m, and the tickets start at just $10.
  • Psychic John Edward visits the Rhode Island Convention Center this Thursday. Tickets start at $125 (plus fees). I don't know if you'll have fun at this event, but maybe he can read your future and let you know.
  • Comedian Jim McCue visits the Comedy Connection at this Friday (8 p.m.) and Saturday (8 and 10:15 p.m.) for three shows.
  • Have you been to Movies on the Block? Every Thursday, movies are shown on the side of buildings at the corner of Union and Westminster Streets in Providence. This weeks movie is Flatliners. The movie starts at dusk and is free and open to the public
