Great Escape: Rockers, Hypnotists, And Super Heroes

Concerts, comedies, and movies are a few of this weekend's suggestions.

As usual, there's something for everyone in this week's edition of Great Escape. Whether you're the type of person who has no problem spending more than $500 for a night out, or a cheapskate looking for a free show, there's something for you.

  • This Friday, Alycia Bedrosian (she of J-DAPA fame) and Phil Pinto perform at Bar 101 in Johnston.
  • For those of you who are too lazy to leave Johnston, you're in luck. Town Hall Lanes hosts Cosmic Bowl every Friday and Saturday night from 7 p.m. to midnight. There's nothing like beer, bowling, and black lights to usher in the weekend.
  • Neil Young, the Godfather of Grunge, comes to the Providence Performing Arts Center this Friday. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show range from $55 to $250. That's right, $250 to see one quarter of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Good thing they won't all be there, or you'd have to cancel your trip to "Ohio."
  • 90's R & B group Boyz II Men will be playing the Twin River Event Center Friday night. Tickets for the show are just $25. By the way, there's no truth to the rumor that they'll be changing their name to "Boyz II Middle-Aged Men."
  • Trinity Rep. will have performances of Steel Magnolias all weekend. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at just $12 (You'll need the cheap seats if you go the the Neil Young show).
  • For the frugal fans, Great Escape, a Journey cover band, will be playing the Lighthouse at Twin River this Saturday. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. and the it's free. They're really not that different than the real thing — after all, each one sends out a guy doing a Steve Perry impression.
  • Fast Five, the lastest movie in The Fast and the Furious series, debuts this Friday at several theaters in the area, including Cinema World in Lincoln, and Providence Place Cinema. The latest film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Jordana Brewster.
  • Frank Santos Jr: The R-Rated Hypnotist will perform at the Comedy Connection in East Providence this Thursday. Show time is at 8 p.m.
  • The Cable Car Cinema is showing Super, a story about a differenct kind of super hero. Super starrs Rain Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon.
