Great Escape: Summer Finale

Local bands, Waterfire, roller derby, and a disaster flick about disease are on the schedule this weekend.

As summer begins to wind down, there are plenty of great events to keep you entertained. Some of this week's choices are Waterfire, a Simon and Garfunkel tribute act, and a lovely film about a disease that threatens to wipe out mankind.

  • Dirty Kitty plays in Johnston this Friday night. If Tuesday doesn't work for you, you can always check out Beer Pong on Thursday nights, while DJ Andy V provides the music.
  • The will be having a 10 for 10 beer tasting this Sunday at 4 p.m. Choose your favorite, and the winner will go on special all week.
  • The latest incarnation of The Met celebrates its first anniversary this Friday night with help from The Agents, The Ravers, and The Rudeness. Tickets are $10, and doors open at 8 p.m.
  • Providence Roller Derby takes over the Rhode Island Convention Center this Saturday night. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children, and V.I.P. packages are available.
  • Why would you want to experience "The Sound of Silence" when you can enjoy a concert? On Saturday night, The Stadium Theater in Woonsocket will host a Simon and Garfunkel Retropsective. The show begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $21. So, after your finished at "Scarborough Fair," pick up "Cecelia" and "Mrs. Robinson", and have a good time! I guarantee you'll be smiling when you're "Homeward Bound."
  • If you're a college student, check out Laugh's in Session this Thursday night at the RI Comedy Connection. Brian Beaudoin and Ray Harrington will be performing, and if you bring your college ID, you get in for free. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.
  • On Saturday night, Waterfire will have a full lighting, featuring opera, Spogga the Fire Dancer, and Andrew Anselmo, "The Origami Guy." The lighting will be at 7:10 p.m. and continue until midnight.
  • Do you miss the 80's? If you do, you can relive them for a few hours at the Lighthouse Bar this Friday night. Fast Times will be playing some of your favorite 80's songs while wearing the best in 80's fashion. The show begins at 8:30 p.m. and is free.
  • Contagion, a film about a disease spreading rapidly across the globe,opens in theaters this week. The film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, stars Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Laurence Fishburne. Find out more on Moviefone.com.
