JHS soccer off to strong start (johnstonsunrise.net) — Johnston High's boys soccer team has opened the season strong, following a 3-0 win over Cumberland with a gritty 1-1 league draw against Davies, capped by a late equalizer. With many experienced returners and tight team chemistry, the Panthers are aiming to finally bring Johnston its first-ever boys soccer championship.
   

2. Johnston superintendent says he will hold bus company accountable as problems continue (turnto10.com) — Johnston's school superintendent says he is holding bus contractor ZUM Transportation accountable after some students reportedly spent hours on buses during the first week of school. The district ordered a full redesign of elementary routes and involved its legal team, while Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. publicly criticized the company's performance and urged the district to consider terminating the contract.
   

3. Stay Out Of These 2 Rhode Island Reservoirs, State Says (patch.com) — State health and environmental officials are warning Johnston residents to avoid Oak Swamp Reservoir because of harmful algae, saying swimming, fishing, boating, and even letting pets in the water is unsafe. They also advise against drinking untreated water or eating fish from the reservoir due to potential stomach, liver, and nervous system effects.
   

4. Holding onto summer or welcoming Fall (johnstonsunrise.net) — Johnston residents can look forward to the 38th Annual Apple Festival at Johnston Memorial Park on Sept. 19–20, featuring free admission, food, crafts, and kids' activities. The statewide roundup also highlights major September festivals in Providence, Pawtucket, Cranston, Narragansett, Cumberland, and beyond, offering plenty of ways to savor late summer and early fall.
   

5. Newport spends more per resident on police and fire than any other Rhode Island community (whatsupnewp.com) — Johnston is among eight Rhode Island communities spending over $1,000 per resident on combined police and fire services, according to a new statewide report. The analysis compares per-capita costs, staffing levels, and pension obligations across cities and towns, and argues Rhode Island's overall police and fire spending is high relative to crime and emergency needs.
