• Middletown Sets Acceptable Use Policy for AI in Town Schools (newportthisweek.com) — Middletown Public Schools has adopted a detailed AI acceptable use policy that bans students from submitting AI-generated work as their own and tightly protects personal data. Administrators, teachers, and RIDE crafted guidelines to harness AI for accessibility and efficiency while guarding against cheating, misinformation, and overreliance, with new coursework planned so all students gain basic AI literacy.
   

• New state housing dashboard shows 658 units backed across Newport County (whatsupnewp.com) — Middletown currently has four state-backed housing developments totaling 169 units in various stages of development, according to a new Rhode Island housing dashboard. The online tool lets residents see how many projects and affordable units are underway in each municipality, including Newport County neighbors like Newport, Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Jamestown.
   

• 'Sewer Rats' Played Big Role in Cleaning Up Newport's Aging Sewer System (ecori.org) — Water quality at beaches shared by Newport and Middletown has improved dramatically thanks to costly sewer system upgrades and a lawsuit that forced both communities to overhaul aging infrastructure. Middletown's pump station overflows and consent decree are part of the story, as Newport now weighs new stormwater fees to fund more than $100 million in remaining work.
