Air Quality Alert In Rhode Island Amid Smoky Skies
The DEM encouraged Rhode Islanders to avoid outdoor activities and strenuous activity, and to stay in air-conditioned areas if possible.

An air quality alert is in place across Rhode Island Tuesday due to wildfire smoke in the atmosphere.
The National Weather Service issued the alert Monday evening. It will remain in effect until 11 p.m.
The smoke comes from wildfires in several Canadian provinces, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said. While atmospheric smoke is common this time of year, the department said, it usually does not cause the concentrations of fine particles at ground level currently seen in Rhode Island. Particle concentrations, which rose to unhealthy levels overnight are expected to fall to moderate by Tuesday evening.

Exposure to particles in the air can cause both lung and heart issues, the DEM said. Small particles, about 2.5 micrometers in diameter, pose the greatest risk because of their ability to get deep into the lungs and even the bloodstream. Children, the elderly and people with heart or lung issues are most at risk.
To stay safe, the DEM encouraged Rhode Islanders to limit outdoor exercise and strenuous exercise during the day. Stay in an air-conditioned environment, if possible. Contact your doctor if you develop respiratory symptoms.
