A history of Jerry Brown Farm:

Back in 1946, a group of summer people enjoyed their coastal summer cottages on rented land in South Kingstown. An association was formed by these original founders; they spent considerable time organizing the Corporation and the 36 stock holders of today have benefited from the results of the founders careful planning.

The name Jerry Brown Farm Association was selected from a copy of a deed dated May 10, 1794 in which The Jerry Brown Farm was conveyed to Jerimiah Brown. Later, this farm was conveyed to the Peckham sisters, Sarah and Anna. The Jerry Brown Farm Association was incorporated and purchased the farm on August 31, 1946 from the Peckham sisters.

The first meeting of the incorporators was held on November 30, 1946. At this meeting, the Articles of Association certified by the Rhode Island Secretary of State and the by-laws prepared by legal counsel were approved.

The original road to the Jerry Brown Farm went from Post Road (the mail route) through the Samuel Whaley Farm. It was a dirt road and to pass, it was necessary to open and close two gates, used to keep the cows in their pastures!

At the first annual stockholders meeting in 1947, President Lindsey referred to a proposal made by Mr. Samuel Whaley in which he would deed to the Association, a strip of land on the south side boundary of his farm for use as a right-of-way to the Association land which would result in by-passing the Whaley barnyard. Mr. Whaley agreed to fence the right-of-way, thereby eliminating the need for gates to keep the cows in!

Original stockholders received one share of stock in the corporation and signed a campsite agreement and a bill of sale.

Today, Jerry Brown Farm remains a private waterfront association with thoughtfully drawn up by-laws and carefully protected water views for everyone. Ownership for this magnificent property is passed as a share of stock in the corporation (there are 36 shares) , a “campsite agreement” and bill of sale of personal property (your home) which gives the owner sole and exclusive use of campsite number 34 and use in common with all the other stockholders of all Association common land.

The success of the Association and life on this waterfront “Farm” is made possible through the friendly cooperation and the spirit of good-will of all the members. An unsurpassed lifestyle is awaiting, but don’t wait too long, Jerry Brown Farm living is in high demand!
