Crusaders skewer Our Lady of Fatima

The Crusaders of the Prout School scored early and often, piercing the Fatima defensive pressure from the outside in, and presenting the long-suffering Tigers with a 60-46 defeat.

WAKEFIELD – In a Division III crossover game Thursday night, the Prout Crusaders stuck it to the Fatima Tigers 60-46.

The Tigers' up-tempo and high-pressure style, fueled by a plucky group of young Fatima players, was a thorn in the Crusaders' side the entire game, but ultimately did not limit Prout's ability to run its half-court offense and to get the open looks its shooters needed.

Throughout the first half, Prout would take an eight or nine-point advantage, only to see the Tigers claw their way back to being behind by four points.  With less than four minutes left in the half and Fatima trailing 22-18, Prout went on a 10-3 run to close out the first stanza with a 32-21 lead.

The second half saw the Crusaders extend their lead.  Fatima put on a valiant effort, but was hampered by poor shooting from the field and from the foul line.

Prout sophomore sensation Eric Rameika definitely answered the call in this one, finishing with a double-double.  Rameika had 23 points, his highest point total so far this young season, and 12 rebounds.

Crusaders' co-captain John King led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, including four made 3-point attempts.

The Fatima scorers were led by freshmen stand-outs Brian McParlin and Devante Youn, who contributed 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Fatima

Our Lady of Fatima High School, located in Warren, plays in the Central District of Division III. Entering last night's contest, the Fatima boys basketball team's record was 0-2, having been previously beaten by East Greenwich and Mt Hope.

This year's Fatima squad is young, with five freshman and only two seniors.

And their coach is a rookie, too.

Mike McParlin, the new head boys' basketball coach for the Tigers, has only been in that position at Our Lady of Fatima since the start of the school year.

Prior to being appointed head coach at Fatima, Mike McParlin had been the assistant boys basketball coach at his alma mater LaSalle Academy in Providence, where as a high school student he was a thousand-point scorer and an All-State selection.

No rest for the weary

The Crusaders get back to action Monday, when they travel to Warwick to take on Toll Gate High School at 7 p.m.

The outcome of Monday's game against Toll Gate will be an indication of whether last night's win over Fatima was merely the apparition of victory or whether it was the real and reproducible return by Prout to its former winning ways.
