Crusaders Weather Hurricanes' Storm, 81-63

In a fast-paced, high intensity contest, the Prout School knocks off a sharp-shooting Warwick squad that drained 11 shots from the arc.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Prout School varsity boys' basketball team, playing in their home gym for the first time this season, defeated Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, 81-63, in a Division III crossover game.

The Crusaders came out plugging, and the Hurricanes came back slugging. Ben Thompson of Prout won the tip, and 10 seconds later fellow co-captain John King scored the first two points of the game. The Warwick team applied strong defensive pressure and answered with three quick treys.

A fast-paced, back-and-forth game ensued, with ties at 10-, 13, and 26 points. The taller, more talented Prout team withstood the Hurricanes' surge though, and the half ended with Prout leading 39-30.

In the second half, fatigue began to slow the Hurricanes' advance.  When the Warwick coach called timeout at the 9:54 mark, Prout was up 59-45.

The game remained spirited, but Prout held onto the advantage.  When the Warwick coach called his next timeout at the five-minute mark, Prout's lead stood at 69-55.

With 3:07 on the clock and Prout leading 71-55, a Warwick fast break ended with a multi-person mid-air collision and Prout senior Benjamin Thompson taking a hard landing out of bounds under the Warwick basket. Thompson was out for the remainder of the game.

The high scorer for Prout was co-captain John King with 30 points, 20 of which came in the first half. King is currently averaging 27.5 points per game in Division III play after two games.

Sophomore starter Eric Rameika scored 22 points, 15 of which came in the second half.  It was the second game in a row in which the feisty young guard matched his uniform number in points scored.   Crusader senior Jeff Lamendola started and contributed 15 points.

The high scorers for Warwick were Corey Muto with 15 points and Patrick Kane with 14.

The Crusaders are now 2-0, undefeated in Division III play. Prout also has two starters on the injured list.

Thompson, who injured his right wrist in Friday's game, and Justin Bristol who injured his ankle last Tuesday at Moses Brown, are likely to be out for the next month.

Next up for the banged up Prout team is a 7 p.m. tip-off Tuesday in Providence with Juanita Sanchez.
