DEM: Rhode Island Beachgoers Well-Behaved During Heatwave
The Rhode Island DEM said they did not receive more complaints than usual despite large crowds at local beaches over the weekend.
NARRAGANSETT, RI — Despite the extreme heat, or perhaps because of it, Rhode Islanders were well-behaved on local beaches over the past weekend. While many flocked to the shore in an attempt to cool off, the Department of Environmental Management said they didn't receive any more complaints of noise, rude behavior or even traffic backups than usual.
"It was business as usual," said Tom Rosa, an Administrative Officer with the Rhode Island DEM who is in charge of monitoring complaints emailed to the department. "We didn't see an increase in reports or any major issues with traffic or parking, which is a common issue on weekends."
According to the DEM, Rhode Island state beaches are smoke-free in an effort to reduce cigarette butt pollution and keep the air clean for fellow beachgoers. The state's liquor laws outlaw the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach, as well.
