Driver Trapped By Guardrail In Serious South Kingstown Crash
Fire officials say crews worked to free the driver for nearly 40 minutes on Monday evening.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Emergency crews spent 40 minutes freeing a trapped driver after a guardrail went through a vehicle in a serious crash on Route 1 North Monday evening.
According to Tom Reed, Deputy Chief and Fire Marshal for the Kingston Fire Department, the crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. when the vehicle went off the road and hit a guardrail just north of the Green Hill Beach exit. Both Kingston Fire and South Kingston Union Fire District were on the scene to free the driver, who was trapped in the vehicle by the guardrail.

"It took us about 38 minutes to free the driver," said Union Fire Chief Steven Pinch. "It was an extremely difficult extrication because the guardrail went through the vehicle. We worked with all the tools we had available."
South Kingstown Police identified the driver as 25-year-old Lauren Pandora of Charlestown. Once freed, she was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. Her current condition is not known.

Police are still working to identify the cause of the crash.
