Fantastic Ways to Wrap up School Vacation Week on a Dime!
This week our Frugal Family column helps you wrap up the February school vacation. We have found some low-cost and even free deals that will let you enjoy these last few days spending some fun time with your kids before they board that yellow bus Monday.

Are you looking for ways to stretch that dollar as vacation week winds down? Well, I’ve scoured the events calendar and flyers for deals, and here’s what I’ve found:
- Kingston Free Library. Welcome to the jungle, as Debi from Jungle Encounters showcases six live animals to all who attend. She will introduce each animal to the audience and teach them about where each animal lives and how it survives. This will be held on Friday, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to noon, and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Kingston Free Library.
- Newport Winter Festival 2011. Narragansett is a hop, skip and a jump away from beautiful Newport. Feb. 18 to 27 is jam packed with many family-friendly as well as adult-centered activities to please everyone. Buttons are only $8 and can be purchased at the Newport Marriott, the Gateway Center and many stores in Newport. Visit here for a list of entertainment and events (and there are plenty!). Seal watching tours, puppet shows, magic shows, wine tastings and much more are available! Many events are free and others will offer you a discount of usually $2 to $4 off admission with your button.
- is a great way place to end the vacation, by indulging in a picturesque setting (summer, here we come!) and digging in to their Friday Fish Fest. It’s $12.99 for “All U Can Eat” chowder, clam cakes, fish and chips (featuring either traditional batter, Cajun & Panko), or a healthy alternative of “All U Can Eat” roasted cod or baked stuffed flounder for only $14.99, with kid-friendly menu specials. Kids also get free ice cream all month long. During school vacation week, George’s is open daily for lunch and dinner.
- at 688 Kingstown Road in Wakefield has household helpers on sale this week until March 5. A large variety of tote storage boxes in varying sizes with covers can be had for only $5.99, in addition to laundry baskets and other heavy-duty containers that serve to help organize your kid’s school projects, your scrapbooking hobby or just getting the garage or pantry ready for spring.
- CVS. If you’re looking for a little end of vacay treat for the kiddos, you can find a great selection of the hottest springtime toys on sale at 20 percent off with your CVS Value card. And while you’re there, why not get a head start on the freshness of spring by picking up your own Herb Grow Kit for $9.99? This is a fun project to start with the kids and you’ll be reaping the rewards of garden fresh herbs all spring long! It is on sale until Feb. 26. Check out the Narragansett flyer here!
