Friendly's Shuts Down Wakefield Branch

The restaurant is one of 63 that the company says it identified as "underperforming."

The Massachusetts-based Friendly Ice Cream Corporation announced today that it will shut down 63 of its locations, including the . The move comes on the heels of the company filing a voluntary petition for bankruptcy this week.

Friendlys states that 424 restaurants will remain open for business. The 63 to close were reportedly selected after a "thorough analysis of the profitability and contribution" identified those locations as underperforming.

In addition to the Pleasant Street location in Attleboro, other affected restaurants include 30 across Massachusetts, as well as restaurants in New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, Vermont, Maine, New Jersey and Connecticut. Two Rhode Island locations — in Wakefield and Warwick — were also closed.
