SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — South Kingstown police welcomed a new canine critter to the force, and the department wants some help giving it a name.

The department was recently gifted a Bernedoodle puppy from Cove Angels Breeding. The pup will be trained as a compassion dog, police said.

"In addition to donating the puppy, they are also providing his early training," police said in a statement. "We are grateful for their kindness and appreciate their generosity! This little guy is going to have a big job, and we have also received funding from AT&T to support our compassion dog program and ensure that he has what he needs to provide support to our officers and serve our community."

The puppy is still just four weeks old, so he's too young to leave home or be sworn in. So while police wait for his arrival, the department asked the public to help name him.

Anyone who wants to try to name the puppy can pitch a name to the department by Aug. 5.
