Narragansett Moves on to Division III Finals

The Mariners score three first half goals and beat Burrillville 3-2 in the semifinals. Narragansett will play Middletown in the finals Sunday 5 p.m. at Rhode Island College.

MIDDLETOWN – The Narragansett girls' soccer team advanced to the Division III championship with a 3-2 victory over Burrillville at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown Thursday.

"This is a great feeling, it hasn't happened [playing in the finals] in a long time," Narragansett head coach Kathryn Mahoney said. "I don't think it's happened since I was in high school, I'm so proud of what they did tonight."

After building a 3-0 lead early in the first half, the Mariners were able to hold on for the victory after the Broncos drew within one goal midway through the second half.

"I think Burrillville had a little momentum in the second half, but my girls did a great job kind of digging it out and playing right until the end," Mahoney said.

Holding true to their usual methods, Narragansett scored their goals in bunches, scoring three goals in five minutes starting at the seventh minute.

"I don't know what it is, but when we score one it's like contagious, I don't mind, that is fine by me," Mahoney said.  "Hopefully we can keep that up going into the next game."

Carla Porras scored a pair of goals, one in the seventh minute, the other in the 12th, and Maggie Salamone netted a score in the 11th.

"It was a wonderful feeling when I scored those two goals, just amazing," Porras said.  "This is awesome, I have no words to explain how this feels."

A frosty November wind was a factor in Tuesday's match, with four of the game's five goals coming from the team going with the wind.

"It's a lot easier to put shot on net from the outside when you have a strong wind like that, so it's tougher to defend and the girls did a great job holding on until the end," Mahoney said.

In addition to the team's speed and skill, a close-knit family atmosphere has also played a major role in the success of the Mariners this season.

"It's a huge factor in how team's mesh on and off the field, it makes all of the difference in the world," Mahoney said.  "I think that's a large contributing factor to our success this year."

Narragansett will play Middletown Sunday at 5 p.m. at Rhode Island College for the D-III title. The Islanders won a wild game right after the Mariners, beating St. Ray's 7-5.
