Narragansett Resident Leonard Receives Philosophy Award by Japanese Society of Clinical Hair Restoration
The 21-year resident is honored for strong commitment to admirable medical ethics and proven therapies in treating male and female hair loss.

CRANSTON – Dr. Robert Leonard, the founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, was presented the Philosophy Award by the Japanese Society of Clinical Hair Restoration for his strong commitment to practicing honorable medical ethics in his treatment of male and female patients with progressive hair loss.
“While this award is a great honor for me, I would like to express my deep, heartfelt condolences to the people of Japan affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami,” Dr. Leonard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time in your country’s history.”
At the recent 16th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Clinical Hair Restoration in Okinawa, Japan, Dr. Leonard addressed an audience of Japanese dermatologists, plastic surgeons and medical specialists about the importance of being honest and forthright when treating male and female patients dealing with hair loss. He stressed the emotional and financial investment that patients instill in those in the medical field, and reinforced the necessity of employing the highest personal and professional standards.

Dr. Leonard’s presentation also covered his approach to treating women with hair loss. According to Dr. Leonard, 30 million women in the United States have the condition of female pattern hair loss, and it is often misdiagnosed, under-diagnosed, and even improperly treated by some in the medical community. Female patients with this condition are often the most prone to experiencing a great deal of anxiety about losing their hair.
“In fact, hair loss can truly be devastating for women,” Leonard said.

For his Japanese colleagues, Dr. Leonard stressed that any woman with hair loss is a candidate for some therapeutic option, whether it is surgical hair restoration, medical hair loss treatment, laser therapy, non-medical hair restoration or psychiatric and psychological intervention. He also noted that hair restoration surgeons are usually the first physicians in an often long line of doctors that these women have seen who actually validate that they actually have a treatable condition.
Dr. Leonard has more than 25 years of experience in cosmetic surgery, serving as New England’s foremost authority on hair restoration. He is the Hair Loss Expert for Johnson & Johnson, makers of ROGAINE®, and is medically educated, trained and licensed to perform hair restoration procedures for men and women.
Raised in Arlington, Massachusetts, Dr. Leonard received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of New Hampshire and earned his medical degree at the University of New England. He is board certified and licensed to practice medicine in several states, including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida.
Dr. Leonard has served on a number of boards, including the State of Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline, and has held leadership positions in several societies, including President of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), Trustee of the University of New England, and Trustee of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
An avid traveler, Dr. Leonard enjoys visiting the cities and countries where he lectures on hair loss treatment and hair transplant procedures. He is an active outdoorsman in water sports and alpine skiing, and lives in Narragansett, with his wife and children.
