📰 News we're reading

1. Limited housing causes concerns for students (rhodycigar.com) — URI students looking off campus are facing steep rents in the Narragansett area, where typical monthly costs hover around $3,000 compared with lower prices in South Kingstown. Students describe scrambling early for leases, juggling high utilities, groceries and gas, and weighing longer commutes or new dorm construction as they try to secure affordable housing for next year.

2. After nor'easter, the ocean is encroaching at Scarborough State Beach (providencejournal.com) — Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett lost two to three feet of sand in the late-September nor'easter, leaving pavilion foundations, metal spikes and ramp edges exposed. DEM says the beach will stay open through winter while crews assess damage, but high-tide water now reaches the seawall where dry sand once stretched 20 to 30 feet.

3. Historic Rhode Island 'Reading Room' On Market For 1st Time In 50 Years (patch.com) — Narragansett residents may notice a major change on Ocean Road: the historic Reading Room, long considered one of the town's most iconic properties, is on the market for $9.75 million. The five-bedroom former social club-turned-residence has deep local roots, including ties to the old Narragansett Pier Casino and the Lila Delman real estate family.

4. Two football playoff systems that would work and Week 5 picks (newportri.com) — Narragansett High's football team is ranked among Rhode Island's top small schools and is picked to win its Week 5 matchup against Scituate. A veteran sportswriter also lays out two alternative playoff systems that could reshape how Narragansett and other programs chase true state titles, arguing for classification by school size instead of current divisions.

5. Washington County saw lowest price for regular gas at $4.19 in week ending Oct. 3 (southcotimes.com) — Drivers in Narragansett saw regular gas around the mid-$4 range recently, as Washington County's lowest reported price dipped to $4.19 per gallon during the week ending Oct. 3. The report compares Narragansett's prices with nearby towns and notes that Rhode Island's statewide average has eased slightly, even as national fuel markets remain volatile.
